The major physical mistake of the ancient Israelites was to ask Samuel for a king to be "like the other nations." That request was a rejection of the only King they had (G-d). That began a long slow descent punctuated by the reign of sone good kings (David, Hezekiah, and Josiah come to mind). Hezekiah and Josiah tried to recall the North back to Jerusalem and the temple worship. Some returned but not enough. Assyria and Babylon ended the political standing of Israel and Judah. Realpolitik was was at the heart of their downfall (internally, it was lack of knowledge of G-d, faithlessness and idolatry). Jesus came, and at his very first test in the desert Satan offered him all the kingdoms of the world if he would worship him. Jesus, very much aware of Israel's entanglement in realpolitik, refused. His Galilean ministry was a regathering of the people of Manasseh and Ephraim to himself and his Father. He told the twelve they would be judges of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was restoring the people to G-d without any political apparatus. They would live among the nations as G-d instructed them through Jeremiah 29. Jesus' disciples (commonly called Christians, a label I reject) had no place in the public square, not school prayer, no nativity scenes, no Merry Christmas, no vote, no army, etc. They multiplied like the Israelites in Egypt. We brought the peace, reconciliation and forgiveness of G-d, survived persecution by Jews and later by Rome and our neighbors. We did it all by the aid of the Holy Spirit and trust in G-d, and we followed the word and example of the earthly Jesus. So what happened to us? We made the very same mistake those Hebrews did when they stood before Samuel asking for a king. Constantine came on the scene with a message like Satan delivered to Jesus 300 years earlier. Help me unify the empire, and I will end the persecution. Jesus had resisted Satan, but we bit the apple. Now allied with the sword of Constantine we would go on for the next seventeen centuries becoming more and more like the nations in which we lived. And here we are in America today, a church with the soul of a nation. As for your piece, I agree with every word, Apologies for taking too long. There is a book here. Thank you for your writing. Keep it up. Sincerely, Bob Burgess (not proofread)

Dear Dr. Davidson: Your piece, “The Jewish Schism Deepens,” provokes a multitude of thoughts, but I will try to pare them down.
