There was zero tolerance when the humorist Dieudonné appeared in the Fogiel television show masquerading as an Israeli fundamentalist with a gun in 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEPfAu2ZpJs A scandal broke out orchestrated by the CRIF (the French AIPAC) and since that time the humorist is banned publicly and even his own theater had to be closed. He has since been scrutinized by all governments and criminalized by the media. Yes, he made some strategic mistakes after the shock of his isolation to make friends with party leader LePen (extreme right) which damaged his good relation with the left and especially with the liberation movements for Palestine. As you pointed out that 9% are of muslim descendance, but 0,05 % are Jewish and are very well represented in the media especially with the self-declared philosopher and zionist BHL (Bernard Henry Levy). Algeria and its bloody war is still considered by many as a "loss" even by some old communists. France has never come to terms with its colonial past and racism is latent. As you also rightly stated the French secularism has strange outcomes. Some people hide behind secularism to express intolerance for the "burka" (Muslim women's headscarf). It seems that the conflict in the Middle East has been imported to France. France is still tolerating the highly aggressive LDJ (ligue de defense juive) which is forbidden in the USA because of its allegiance to the Kach Party. We are still far away from a peaceful world we need so much. Warmly Frigga

Dear Lawrence,
I have read your analysis of “encore for Charlie Hebdo” and would like to give you some indications of the hypocrisy in France of the so called “freedom of expression”. People, whether Muslim or not, have every right to express disgust. To say the murder was provoked is crossing a line to justifying barbarism. That response is an assault on human rights and gets no respect from me. Can anyone see that as somehow "progressive"?
